Cutting Bills by Collective Switching

Birmingham & Solihull Together has been launched, aiming to cut people’s energy bills by collective switching. People join together to negotiate a lower price from energy suppliers.

Opens February 18th, closes March 17th 2013. Well worth checking out their website

Of course the only permanent way to cut your bills is to use less fuel, through energy saving measures such as those installed by Birmingham Energy Savers

If you own or rent from a private landlord a house in the Balsall Heath area of Birmingham that is old and expensive to heat, you could be eligible for a package of subsidised energy-saving work this winter,

For example;

Loft insulation

Solid or cavity wall insulation

New efficient gas condensing boiler

New controls on heating

Your contribution would be spread out over many years, covered by the savings.

House with no Fuel Bills

There will be a free open day at the Zero Carbon House, designed by Balsall Heath architect John Christophers on Saturday 8th September.

This house stores its own heat and requires no outside fuel supply. It makes its own water, electricity and hot water. Everyone should have a look. One day all houses may be like this. There will be a chance to hear how the house has performed in two cold winters, and to talk about how to make your own house more energy efficient.

For those who missed the insulated house in Kings Heath, there is a similar project in Northfield

Energy Makeover Open Day

Saturday 14th July, 10am – 12pm

As part of its Home Energy Makeover Scheme, Northfield Ecocentre is running an open day on a property that has had work done. . This property has had external solid wall insulation, but only on the back as it’s a mid terrace.

Insulate your walls to save gas

Energy Saving Open Day on Sunday 24 June

Your chance to look around a typical, two-bedroom terraced house on which several thousand pounds worth insulation measures have been installed at 142 Grange Road, in Kings Heath.

Internal solid wall insulation to the front
External solid wall insulation to the rear
Replacement timber double glazed windows

There will be an opportunity to talk to the home-owners and the builder, Local social enterprise Jericho Construction about the work that was done, including choice of materials, how the period Victorian features of the house were preserved, time-scale, and cost, etc.

You will need to book the time you would like to take the tour as we are only able to accommodate up to 10 people at a time, in order to ensure everyone has an opportunity to ask questions and to examine the detail of the work done.

We will be showing people round at the following times so let us know which time you would like to come : 11.00 am, 12 noon, 2.00 pm, 3.00 pm, or 4.00 pm

My terrace house in Balsall Heath , built in 1884, has used standard energy saving measures to achieve a halving of gas, electricity and water consumption. I generate more electricity on the roof than the house uses in a year. My electricity bill is £90 for a year. See my solid wall insulation, solar panels, other measures. full explanation by the homeowner (me). More details here
